In the early 2010s, Sweden was severely critiqued by the EU for allowing an organised hunting season on wolves, while so called 'disorganised' countries in for instance Africa spend impressive amounts of resources to fight for the survival of animals threatened to become extinct.

Ironically, the main argument was that wolves had become inbred, although the killed animals had no such signs. The hunters, on the other hand, were often inbred themselves.

The hunting season was soon discontinued, but due to a tragic incidence at the Kolmården Zoo, where an employee was killed by wolves, the debate started once again. Sadly, some people feel that the actions of imprisoned animals who attack when feeling threatened, is reason enough to exterminate the species.
